Are you still using two optical fibers for your communication systems?
Many fiber spans can be equipped to communicate using only a single optical fiber. The optical signal photons are just as happy travelling in two directions in one fiber as in two fibers. Reducing to one fiber can help decrease your fiber lease costs and increase fiber distribution flexibility.
You will need to use specially designed DWDM or CWDM multiplexers that are equipped for single fiber communication. Also, two different DWDM or CWDM wavelengths need to be used for each communication channel. This means for the same communication channel the optical transceivers at each end of the link will have different channel numbers. Therefor, if you order a 8 wavelength single fiber DWDM multiplexer, it will provide you with 4 communication channels, since 2 wavelengths are used for each channel.
This application is most popular for metro spans where optical amplifiers are not required, since the setup is the simple. However single fiber systems can also included EDFAs but does require more equipment.
